Cutlass Velo Journal: A Reintroduction
Recently, I decided to resuscitate one of my creative outlets: writing.
The intent is to explore facts, concepts, examine struggles, and extol the virtues of professional bicycle service.
Who is Cutlass Velo?
My name is Tommy Barse. I have possessed various roles within the bike industry over the last 18 years. I’ve worked in high volume retail shops performing sales and service writing. I have painted frames professionally. For several years I assisted frame builder, Chris Bishop, in his workshop doing prep work, polishing, and finish work. Before and during some of these phases I was also working as a messenger in downtown Baltimore.
I formed Cutlass 10 years ago here in Baltimore, MD. Cutlass Velo is dedicated to providing transparent service starting with a thorough mechanical evaluation process. An evolving work in progress, I strive to serve clients while removing the stigma of working with a professional shop.
Follow along while I reveal the diversity of procedures, repairs, and thoughts that make Cutlass Velo tick.
I’ll continue featuring build projects as well as product and tool highlights to create some texture to the site.
You’ll learn that it’s not a glamorous pursuit despite some depictions made on social media. That’s okay; it’s fun to get down in the dirt to produce reliable work that clients can enjoy without worry. Problem solving is a technical and creative pursuit.
